Bristol Solar Challenge

ResNet is in the process of bringing into being a new, community owned, domestic solar PV scheme, focussing on the neighbourhoods in Bristol least able/likely to take up commercial offers of rooftop solar.

Powering Your Neighbourhood

This means that we are looking for neighbours (10 households or more; homeowner or tenants/landlords) who live in the same street or in very close vicinity to look together at options for solar panels on their roofs, which ResNet would provide and the arrays would be owned by the community. Householders would be able to cut around 30% off their electricity bills compared to now having Solar PV on their roofs – and it will be connected to either a battery in each home or to a communal battery in a public space nearby. ResNet is also looking at the possibility of connecting our solar energy with EV changing ports of communal, car club spaces (rather than EV changing points for individual homes) in each street, giving greater flexibility to transport in our neighbourhoods at the same time.

Beyond Solar

We are not limiting ourselves to ‘just’ solar though. ResNet will encourage neighbours to look at how they might be able to retrofit their homes with other measures, such as insulating their homes better and potentially having other technologies available. No, this is not a grant scheme, but with the help of our partners and neighbours working together to figure out what the best solutions for the homes they live in are, we are confident that we can come up with affordable, fair and working solutions for each home, street and neighbourhood.

If you live in Bristol, and you and your neighbours want to be part of the Bristol Solar Challenge pilot of 100 homes next year, apply on our form or simply email energy@resnet.org.uk.

We are already talking to many of Bristol’s community organisations and the people living in the surrounding communities, to make sure they are included and able to take part.

A large solar scheme:

ResNet is not doing this work in isolation of course but is collaborating with retrofit focussed organisations in Bristol to make sure that homes are energy efficient, as well as able to have solar PV installed on their roofs.

Supporting
20,000 Homes by 2032:

We are now in the feasibility stage of this part of our project (that is what we have are receiving funding for) with the aim of launching our pilot phase within the next 12 months and our main programme to start as soon as possible after evaluation of the pilot phase – with the potential for 20k homes having community owned solar PV added to their roofs by 2032. Fingers crossed, as there are still some interesting challenges ahead in terms of community ownership, but we are confident that these can be overcome!
